Vancouver, B.C., September 1, 2026 – As Indigenous Nations across British Columbia continue to strengthen self-determination, governance and economic prosperity, AFOA BC is celebrating 30 years of building financial, administrative, governance and leadership capacity that supports Indigenous communities across the province.

For three decades, AFOA BC has provided Indigenous professionals, First Nations, and Indigenous organizations with practical education, professional development, conferences, certificate programs, and community-based training in finance, governance and leadership.

British Columbia is home to 202 First Nations, representing approximately one-third of all First Nations in Canada. As Indigenous governments manage growing investments and community priorities, the need for skilled finance, administration, governance and leadership professionals continues to rise.

AFOA BC’s story began in September 1996, when a small group of Indigenous finance and administration professionals organized a conference to share knowledge and explore the need for professional development and networking opportunities. Two months later, AFOA BC was formally established as a non-profit society. Its successful model later contributed to the establishment of AFOA Canada in 1999.

Today, AFOA BC supports Indigenous professionals at every stage of their careers. Throughout its 30th anniversary year, AFOA BC will celebrate the people, partnerships and milestones that have shaped the organization while continuing its commitment to strengthening Indigenous leadership and capacity for generations to come.
